That's right ladies and gentlemen.
THEY ARE HERE!
Our miraculous, surprising, beautiful twin boys have arrived. Here is the story:

Saturday morning around 730 am Daddy and Mommy went to Zeeland Community Hospital. Walking into our room was definitely more of a wake up call than the alarm that morning. TWO OF EVERYTHING!! Our room was packed. They even had to take out some of the normal furniture to fit everything. I was hooked up to the pitocin and antibiotic through an IV. Bummer that I was now tied down to the bed for the rest of the day (you REALLY would think hospitals could afford a little bit more comfy beds!). Auntie Laura joined us around noon and brought Daddy some Subway for lunch. I however, was not allowed to eat anything. So I watched and waitied.
The waiting continued for quite some time. Around 2 Dr DeWitt came and broke the water for Lucas. My contractions were fairly strong at this point but rather spaced apart. Now they started picking up as did my pain. The contractions were really high in my ribs which was making it hard for me to get full deep breaths. They called the Anesthesiologist
(who seriuosly was 4 foot NOTHING! Shortest little thing but I soon came to love love love her :)) and around 430pm I was officially epiduraled. Ahhh bliss. It was the best epidural I had (outta 3). Not too strong that it made me pass out/drop my blood pressure, not too strong that I had no idea what was going on in my lower half, but strong enough that I was not in intense pain and was able to rest.
Around 845pm Dr DeWitt came bakc as it was time for these babies to enter the world.
902pm Lucas David was born weighing a WHOPPING 7lbs 5 oz and 20 inches long.
He snuggled on my belly for a few minutes (his cord was rather short so he couldn't reach my chest). We ohhed and ahhed and marveled at his size and how perfect he was. Then Dr DeWitt broke Landon's water. Robb cut the cord for Lucas and he was weighed.

917pm Landon Jonathan was born weighing a WHOPPING 7lbs 4oz and 18 inches long.
We all laughed as he was weighed.. almost exactly the same. I really was hoping for a six pound baby. I don't know why but something in me mentally wanted a "little peanut" (even though they ARE ALL peanuts at birth!!). No such luck. This mama carried almost FIFTEEN POUNDS of baby inside her- making it full term to 37 weeks and 4 days.

I will, admit I say this with pride. Not the kind of pride that I actually had anything to do with it.. but pride in the gift that this is what my body was made to do. God graciously gave me the ability to carry full term healthy, beautiful baby BOYS. I absolutely know what a blessing this is and reflecting on how effortless my pregnancies really were makes me all the more aware and GRATEFUL.

Neither boy needed any special medical attention. We were able to shower them in love and kisses from us, friends and family immediately. We came home Monday afternoon.
Grant and Tanner were in a bit of shock seeing them at home in "their" setting for the first time. They stared and stared.

Lucas and Landon- you ARE good and perfect. I know that things in life will try and change that. Remember that this world is also a good and perfect gift. Love it, care for it, make your imprint on it. We cannot wait to walk with you on this journey.

Preparing for TWINS.. that's right I said twins!

In March we got a little surprise. At my 20 week ultrasound the tech informed us that there are TWO babies growing inside me.. and that they are both BOYS.
My first response was to laugh. Twins? Noone in our family has twins! I barely know anyone who has twins! Two babies at once- really?? AND now we're going to have FOUR boys?? FOUR BOYS!?
What are the odds.. you would think that somewhere in the mix we could have worked in a girl :) But nope.. God has something completely different planned for our family than I ever did (which is reassuring and frightening all at the same time!).

So beyond the mental preparation (which I'm not sure I will ever completely have a handle on.. perhaps when they are 18), we are now working on the physical preparations like:
Double outfits -
I still have pretty much all of Grant and Tanner's baby clothes but only used them for one at a time :) And both boys were born at 39-40 weesk so I hardly needed any newborn sizes. Now I'm on a NB jammies/onesies hunt at every garage sale.
Double Carseats-
Thankfully we found two on Craigs List that came with 3 bases. We weren't exactly planning on getting two more because we do still have our old one but since this person had twins she had a matching set (which I liked).
Double Stroller-
This is kinda funny... we found one on Craigslist in Jenison and bought it. Problem was that they had it outside so we couldnt' tell how smelly it was (imagine smoker smell covered up by gramma perfume- bad bad combo). Well my mom and I did a garage sale and I thought.. why not just try to sell it? See what happens. Well we did sell it.. for $5 more than we bought it for! My friend's sister also had one she was willing to sell so I currently have that one in my garage. Problem is that its completely opposite colors as my car seats (which I know SHOULDN'T be a big deal.. but it kind of is to me) so we are still deciding if we want to keep that one. We watch Craigs List a lot for deals.
Double Boppy and new Nursing Pillow-
Found another boppy at a garage sale and bought a Twin Nursing Pillow used. I'm considering making matching boppy covers myself.. just have to decide on a fabric I love (easier said than done! so many options out there).
Double Cribs-
Well the nursery is pretty much ready to go except we need a second crib. We have the extra bedding set that matches the one we bought for Grant (which I'm super excited about having!!) but we're just waiting to find a deal on a crib or borrow one.
Double Diapers-
Well we thought it might be a wise time to invest in cloth (shoulda done it years ago!). I found a great deal on some barely barely used Bum Genius covers and inserts. We started using them on Tanner to get the hang of them. Plus- I'm banking on the babies be smaller than 8 lbs to start which is what these are rated for - so we are planning to use disposables until they can fit into the BGs. And my super duper handy man hubby installed a sprayer for me which works TONS better than trying to scrap the poppy out with toilet paper.

This really is just a start. We put Grant and Tanner together in Grant's room with a bunkbed. Its only been a week and things are going GREAT there yet but hopefully we will have enough time before the twins arrival for them to get accustomed to it and SETTLED down!

Tanner Jaycob Kalman

Had Tanner's two year check up today. Thankfully he didn't need any shots but the doc said he had some fluid build up in his right year so we got an antibiotic for that (The ironic thing is that I was in there last week because I suspected an ear infection and that doctor (not our regular one) told me his ears were "pristine". Hmm go figure).
He is 15th percentile for weight and 50th for height. She said he looks great and is growing well.. he doesn't need to go in until he's three. Three! Ahh! I dont like to think about that! Where did my little snuggly baby go...
Height: 34 1/4 inches
Weight: 25.6 pounds

Can't find Grant's stats from that age so I can't compare but I know at 18 months Grant was close to 25 lbs aready. Tanner has always been a little small but grows at a pretty regular pace. No worries.. just my "little" T-man!

Out of the clear blue a few days ago Tanner started counting. I watched him in amazement and he just kept right on going- all the way to ELEVEN! I was quite impressed and it was pretty much the cutest thing ever. He doesn't say his 'v's that well so SEVEN sounds like seben and and eleven is LEBEN. We are working on his ABCs. He knows the tune of the ABC Song and will start saying a few but then just makes the rest up. He is a complete chatter box. Although when someone he doesn't know wants him to chat he gets all shy and snuggles up to mommy. I'm pretty much fine with that :) He is quite vocal about his feelings- unfortunately that extensive vocabulary somehow disappears when dealing with his big brother and usually just screams come out. We are working on this *daily*. I know becoming the middle child will be an adjustment for Tanner but I also believe that he will be an excellent big brother and I'm excited to see him transition into his new role. We have so much fun talking about Baby Nana coming I wonder how much of it he really understands. Grant on the other hand - understands completely and is ecstatic for Baby Nana's arrival. Hard concept that even though my belly is *huge* already- its still going to be 4+ months before he/she gets here.
Ultrasound in a few weeks.. that will add an interesting twist to things now won't it?? :)

We are still here...

The saddest part of my "excuse" for not keeping up on blogging is that we HAVE the internet at home now! And have for 3 months! Oh well.. I won't even attempt to justify my selfish behavior.

Winter is flying by (thankfully). We got a little surprise late November.. that is due late July. We are thrilled about becoming a family of five. Grant is convinced its a sister because "I prayed for one!". Tanner doesn't seem to really understand other than he knows where Baby Nana is (this is what the boys have nicknamed the baby).
The holidays came and went and were wonderful. The second week of January we spent 6 days in Florida with my parents. Exactly what the doctor ordered! (ok so maybe she didn't order me to go on vacation.. but she was definitely digging the idea). The boys had fun and Tanner talks about Floriday and Cocoa Beach almost everyday.
Tanner turned TWO last weekend. We had a great party with almost the entire family (13 kids ages 8 and under and 12 adults all hanging out at our house.. can we say SLIGHT chaos?). It was wonderful to watch all the cousins play and interact. And of course there was yummy cake and ice cream. We have just started being more serious about potty training.. although we aren't quite SUPER serious yet. Hopefully before Baby Nana comes we will be there.
We had quite the storm here this week so Robb got the day off. We have been going a little stir crazy but making the most of our random day together.. like making Curious George Robots and hauling out some long forgotten toys (who knew packing something away for a month could bring hours of renewed entertainment?).

God is blessing us and we want to be a blessing to others. Something I need to remind myself of when I have been holed up in the house for 3 days in a row, without a shower, wearing the same sweatshirt again (because let's be honest- they are the most comfortable).
We are so blessed!

FUN WEEK!

So this week has been lots of fun for the boys and myself.
Saturday we had a party for Grant with the Kalmans to celebrate his 4th birthday. No- that was not a typo. He really is four already! He will be going to preschool this fall at Hudsonville Christian and he is ecstatic. I am mostly ecstatic.. sad that he is growing so fast but excited to see this new chapter start for him. And i am excited to have some one-on-one time with Tanner.
Something I never considered when having our second child was missing out on the one on one time with the newborn. Grant was a champ when Tanner arrived and was a joy to have around- but I was unable to focus 100% on TJ so I am excited to have this time together.

Anyway.. continuing our week
Sunday the whole fam went to Holland to play at the beach for a bit after going to Mars. It was great. We ate lunch on the beach, played in the water and walked the pier. Both boys took great naps that afternoon :)
Monday my sister and her family were in GR so we went with them to their grammas house to swim. Again.. the boys LOVE being in the water and playing with their cousins so we enjoyed that day.
Tuesday we hit the zoo with all 11 VandenHoek grandchildren. I think every kid loved it :) they had so much fun checking out all of God's cool creatures while laughing and playing with eachother. After that we went to Doug and Kates to swim in their pool.. have I mentioned that my kids are complete water rats?? :)
Wednesday night our fam hit the Hudsonville Fair and Grant got to ride his FIRST fair ride and they both expierenced an elephant ear. YES! now they are truly living!
